The Future?

A quote from 'Overheard in the Newsroom' (on facebook):

#1924: Reporter: “I’m going to go as a journalist for Halloween. All I need for my costume is an empty bottle of vodka and my shattered dreams.”

In all seriousness - where is the future of journalism? It is an entire field of work that seems to be disappearing (I realize this has happened to many other careers, but still). Journalism is an entire college major! It's an entire school at some colleges.

What is going to happen? As people find their news in different ways, will the whole job of a 'journalist' become obsolete? Are there credited, accurate, well-researched sources of news out there on the internet? If newspapers, magazines, etc., become obsolete, will there be anyone out there fighting to keep citizens informed? Were newspapers/magazines/what-have-you doing this in the first place? What will become of all the journalists/journalism majors?

That's Not My Name said...

Just because it's a college major, doesn't mean there have to be jobs associated with it. See: history, philosophy, English, comparative literature, gender studies, interdisciplinary studies, humanities, French, Spanish, Classics, Greek, art, etc etc etc. Personally, I didn't go to college so I could get a job.
My opinion is of course, unpopular, as everyone seems to think that college=job, when it was never really intended that way. I'm a nerd though, and I believe in the classic idea of liberal studies-that you explore a broad range of topics to develop your rational thought and intellectual abilities, which can apply to any job. And learning for the sake of learning.

I would argue that those going to college pursuing journalism majors should, at this point in time, be fully aware that the nature of news is changing. They should be prepared to change accordingly. They should be ready and willing to learn about technology and its role in the information dissemination process.
Also, I would argue that there is no such thing as a credible source. Every news report is filtered through the lens of what the journalist deems important. I don't really care if newspapers went away. I get most of my news from the web. Perhaps a paid subscription is the way to go. Perhaps we should shift towards community-based reporting in blogs. I'm not sure.
Maybe, instead of journalism, they should create a new major called 'media information.' or something.
