Tapas Restaurants. The WHOLE concept of them.
Maybe it's not that they exist. Maybe it's that I know too many people who like them and want to go to them. In fact, I think there's a conspiracy amongst men - EVERY man I've been asked out by over the past three years has suggested "tapas".
Yes, it's true, I DON'T like sharing food. (Insert comment about only children here.) Actually, it's not that I don't like sharing food - it's more that when I go out to eat, I want to pick the specific meal that I want and enjoy THAT meal (not a teeny tiny part of it).
At tapas, you kind of have to think of what everyone wants to eat, not just yourself. I have obscure tastes (I like spicy food, which not everyone enjoys). Also, I like to doctor my food. At tapas restaurants, it seems like you have to pick something generic as opposed to what you really want so it's something everyone likes. I kind of feel like this is like when one person wants the red couch and the other wants the blue couch, so they compromise with the green couch and no one is happy. Also, if there's something really good, you can only take a little bit of it.
I guess I don't understand everyone else's love of these style restaurants. I guess I don't really like 'family style' restaurants, in general. I just want to pick what I want and have that. Am I alone in this?

I agree, BUT what about SUSHI?!?!?
I disagree. Whenever I go out to a meal, they always give me way to much. I get sick of the same flavor. I end up eating like a bird. Tapas lets me explore AND I end up eating way more because of all the textures and tastes. I hate to say it, but I am a huge tapas fan even though it is annoyingly trendy. (Same goes for Dim sum):)
First of all, I generally agree with what you're saying. However, I think the whole tapas thing in the US is a stupid trend. They have taken something that is a part of Spanish culture and have turned it into a meaningless fad.
Tapas in the sense that we know them here aren't the same as what they really are in Spain. No one eats "tapas" as a meal. The idea behind tapas is that you go to the bar, order a drink, and you get a snack with it. The more drinks you order, the more snacks you get. Nothing fancy about it. No extra charges (like 12.00 for a plate of cheese).
I think it's actually a clever idea, but they don't do that here. They have turned the idea of a "snack to accompany your drink" into a meal that is shared by many people and costs a lot of money. Anyone familiar with Spain would tell you the same. Which is why my family doesn't frequent tapas restaurants.
Piper ii is very correct Tuan said the same thing when he came back from spain that he was pleasantly surprised by the way Tapas work in Spain. They really should call Tapas something else here.
I feel your pain. As a vegetarian, I can't stand family style restaurants, where everyone can eat my food, but I can't eat most other people's. Lay off my food peeps!
Wow, so much to respond to....
I would say for sushi - I would rather have a couple different rolls - so it's good to have a couple people for sushi. However, I only like sushi with someone with the same taste (some of the too exotic things scare me) - so I am lucky with you Emily! (I need a san fran and a samurai, stat!)
I think I would like tapas better as an appetizer, not a real meal.
