So I have a brand new facebook friend. She is joining facebook for the first time. She began to fill out her profile and listed herself as 'single'. The logo for listing oneself as single is, apparently, a heart sliced right across the mid-section (which most would refer to, upon viewing, as a 'broken heart'). She is not single in the sense that she's getting out of a relationship, but single in the sense that it's just what she is. Facebook feels this deserves a 'broken heart' graphic.Isn't this a little....depressing? Borderline offensive? Seriously, facebook.

that's kind of offensive! as if the inevitability of singleness is broken heartedness or sadness...maybe since facebook is ALL about sociality and social networking(is that a word), it expects anyone with a "single" status is a stain on the idea. Broken heart. Sad face.
Just so you know, my co-worker recently joined Facebook. She listed her status as single today and it did not show a broken heart. It just showed a heart. So I think something may be off about your theory. I've only seen it when someone was listed as in a relationship and then changed their status to "single."
Actually, scratch that last part. Another person was in a relationship and is no longer...same thing, just a heart. Hearts symbolize relationships in general.
